Transportation
Air
The main point of arrival is Cancun International Airport, a two-hour flight from Mexico City.  Available transportation from the airport includes buses, rental cars or taxis which depart from the terminal. Playa del Carmen has a small airport with planes which make short hops to the more distant places.  From the airport, you can take a shared minivan (colectivo) or taxi into the city.

Car
Rental cars and taxis are available. Driving is on the right. There are several car rental companies, rates will depend on availability, size and type of car. You will be expected to pay for any gas, insurance, taxes, or extra equipment. If your reservation is for a time period more than 5 days, a weekly rate will be quoted.

Bus
Taking a bus is the least expensive way to travel to Playa del Carmen.  Buses by Playa Express and Inter Playa (two of the bus companies offering services between Cancun and Playa del Carmen) stop at the station at the 5th Avenue, about a block and a half from the ferry pier.  The ticket for one of the modern, air-conditioned buses costs around US$3.

Ferry
There is a passenger-only ferry service between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.  Tickets can be purchased at the ferry dock.  Boats operate between 5am and 10pm.  The passage takes roughly an hour, and a one-way fare is about US$7.
