GETTING THERE

Air
Oaxaca's international airport Aeropuerto Federal Xoxocotlan (code OAX) is about 10km south of Oaxaca City.  It's a one-hour flight from Mexico City's Benito Juarez Airport.  Carriers that service OAX include Mexicana, Aeromexico, Aviacsa, Aero Vega, Aerocalifornia, and Aerocaribe.

Bus
Deluxe buses make the six-hour nonstop run from Mexico City to Oaxaca for about $23.  Oaxaca City's first-class terminal is called the ADO, from which the ADO and Cristobal Colon bus lines provide service.  The second-class bus station, Central de Autobuses, serves intermediate towns within the state.  Cristobal Colon provides service to Oaxaca City's ADO bus station.

Car
If you rent a car from Mexico City, you can take Mexico 190 south and east through Puebla and Izucar de Matamoros to Oaxaca City.  This route takes roughly about six to seven hours.  The toll road that connects Mexico City to Oaxaca City via Tehuacan costs about $30 one day, and helps reduce the driving time to four hours.

GETTING AROUND

Taxi
There are ample of taxis in Oaxaca and they are reasonably priced although not metered.  Fare should be agreed upon ahead of time.  If you're taking a taxi to outlying destinations, ask the driver to show you the tariff card.  In addition to the taxis, there are also colectivos heading for destinations all over the state.

Car
Cars are available for rent at the airport, in town, and through travel agencies at various hotels.  However, Oaxaca City is compact enough that you do not need a car of your own and even outlying sights can be reached by taxi or on a tour.
