SHOPPING

In Merida, you will discover lots of modern and luxurious malls such as Plaza Las Americas, Plaza Dorada, and La Gran Plaza where you can find the best sales and latest fashion details, known brands and food courts.  However, the main charm in Merida are small shops with the loveliest local designs in clothes, handicrafts, jewelry, leather shoes, candies, and especially the quality hammocks.  Not to be missed are the multi-colored and vivid markets Lucas De Galvez, Mercado de Santa Ana and El Bazar Garcia Rejon where wonderful handmade souvenirs as well as authentic local food await the visitors.  If you are lucky to be in Merida on Sunday at the main Plaza near the City Hall, you will be able to enjoy a great party where music, art performances, expositions and shows are surrounded with small stands full of interesting and unusual products.

DINING

The richness of culture and visitors has contributed to the diverse eateries in Merida.  Apart from the acclaimed local Yacatecan cuisine at Los Almendros and Eladio's where the food is free as long as you continue to drink its beer, and myriad of other outdoor market restaurants you can find around the neighborhood of Santa Ana which leads into Paseo Montejo, there are Italian and Mediterranean food to be savored at the well-known La Tratto while La Nao and Hong Kong will fulfill your curiosity why Chinese is named one of the best cuisines on earth.  Chili's offers a place to order excellent ribs and other American grilled specialties in a friendly ambience.  For good, inexpensive thin crust pizzas, Billy Pizza on Paseo Montejo is the place to go, complete with a loud rock-n-roll atmosphere.  Traditional tacos and other continental Mexican dishes are found at Restaurante Leo and Las Mil Tortas.  Beef lovers will be delighted by the Argentine-style food at La Cabana del Gaucho, and Soberanis should not be missed if you're looking for scrumptious seafood.

NIGHTLIFE

Nightlife is first rate in Merida and there is a wide range of options to choose from.  After the meal hour has passed, La Tratto is turned into a lounge which is popular for its nice atmosphere as well as tasty Italian hors d'ouvres.  Another place to begin the night with is El Cielo which is set in an open air patio where soft lounge and trance music wafts through the air, preparing you for a long night ahead at some other upbeat venues.  La Mancha serves Italian dishes in its music lounge where the tunes are delivered by experienced international DJs, whereas Canta Mexico is the perfect venue for aspired singers!  Whenever you feel ready to shake your body as the night deepens, head to Mambo Cafe or Tequila Rock for some disco fun.
