GETTING THERE
Air
Ixtapa's airport, Manuel Zurita Gallegos airport, receives direct flights
from many U.S. cities in addition to flights from throughout Mexico. The
fligh takes 6 hours from New York, 4 hours from Chicago, and 3 1/2 hours from
Los Angeles. Carriers that service Ixtapa include Mexicana, Aeromexico,
Alaska Airlines, America West, and Continental. You can purchase a taxi
ticket to get to the hotel zone upon your arrival.
Bus
Various first and second-class bus companies run to Ixtapa's Central de
Autobuses station. Many of these companies have started to accept credit
card in addition to cash payment as well. The trip takes around 9 hours
from Mexico City.
Car
The trip from Acapulco takes about 3 1/2 hours on a good two-lane road (toll
roads recommended) that will take you through small towns and coconut groves
while giving a spectacular view of the ocean for the last third of the way.
The drive from Manzanillo takes around 8-10 hours, and it's safer to be done
during the day.
Ship
Several cruise lines, including Cunard, Holland America Lines, Krystal
Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and Royal Cruise Lines, sail
to Ixtapa from Los Angeles in winter.
GETTING AROUND
Taxi
Generally, you can take a taxi to go anywhere within the proximity of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo
and it is on the whole much cheaper than renting a car. Taxi in Ixtapa is
not metered, and it's always a must to agree on the price before you get in to
prevent a rip-off.
Car
There is little point to rent a car if you're planning to stay only in and
around Ixtapa because taxi is more convenient. However, if your plan
involves exploring the coastal region around Ixtapa, there are car rental booths
inside the airport, or you can make a request at your hotel's desk as well.
Bus
Inexpensive minibuses run every 10-15 minutes between the Ixtapa hotels and
between the Ixtapa hotel zone and downtown Zihuatanejo; the fare is about 30
cent.
Bicycle
There is a bicycle track between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, and bikes can be
rented locally if you're inclined to explore the towns with pedal power.
