Geography & Climate

Mexico is located in North America, bordering the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, between Belize and the United States, and bordering the North Pacific Ocean, between Guatemala and the US with total land area about 1,923,040 sq km. Mexico's comparative size is slightly smaller than three times the size of Texas.  Its topography ranges from lowland coastal to high mountain areas which include the Sierra Madre Occidental in the east, the Sierra Madre Oriental in the west, and the Sierra Volcanica Transversal which lies to the south of Mexico City.

When to go

As the Tropic of Cancer crosses over Mexico, it effectively divides the country into temperate and tropical zones where land north of the twenty-fourth parallel has cooler temperatures in the winter months.  The southern half however maintains constant temperatures year round and the sole factor that determines the variation is elevation.  Summer generally covers the period from June to October, but it may rain in the central and southern regions while the north remains relatively dry.  Winter is traditionally the tourist season and December is by default the busiest month for the big beach resorts.  Here is the guide to the weather in each region of Mexico:

Northern West Coast Beaches to Mazatlan
Winter days here are mild although the nights are chilly as cold winter storms regularly descend from the US.  Consequently, Winter is automatically the primary rainy season in the region.  Summer temperatures can be outrageous with an extremely high level of humidity.  The best time to visit the West Coast is from November through February.

Central West Coast Beaches Mazatlan to Manzanillo
Summer here are insufferably hot and humid as the norm.  In consequent, Winter offers the most excellent beach weather  as daytime temperatures average around mid-eighties while nighttime temperatures average around sixties.  It rains in Summer here more than in Winter.  The best time to visit are December-March.  A period from June through September should be avoided as Hurricanes are usually likely to occur.

Southern West Coast Manzanillo to Tapachula
This southern section of the coast offers a warmer weather than its northern counterpart.  However, travellers who are not used to humidity may have to prepare for the sweat-drenched as well as the rain-soaked experience during Summer here.  Nevertheless, this is a great beach weather for devotive swimmers and passionate surfers.  Best months to visit are December through February.

East Coast Texas to Villahermosa
Even though Mexico's West Coast is wet, it's uncomparable to the wetness of the gulf coast in all seasons.  The high humidity is as a matter of fact what dispels tourists from this region.  Winters are cold and wet and travellers may feel like they are being steamed during Summer.  However, interested travellers may visit this region in deep winter (December through February) during which the temperature is the most pleasant.

Yucatan Peninsula
The cold fronts from the US usually hits the Yucatan Peninsula, which results in the cold drizzle, overcast skies, and gusty winds in the region.  Winter's temperature during day time can range between seventies and eighties.  Summer's temperature can rise up over one hundred degrees.  Summers are always hot and wet, with constant seasonal visit by hurricanes.  The best months to hit this area where resorts such as Merida and Cancun are located are November-February.

Interior Mexico
The rainy season of the interior Mexico falls on Summer.  However, as the major part of the interior is on a high elevation, the temperature and humidity are fairly moderate.  Winter can be freezing especially in the north.  Daytime highs are usually in the fifties to low seventies.  Summers can be delightful as daytime highs in the seventies while night time have temperatures in the high fifties to seventy degrees.

The Copper Canyon
This high-elevation region exhibits a huge difference between Summer and Winter.  During Winter, it is not surprising for snowbed to cover the upper regions from December through February.  The temperatures can drop to ten degrees and highs to sixty degrees.  On the other hand, Summer rim temperatures can be in the eighties whereas deep in the canyons it can reach a hundred twenty or higher.  It rains a lot in Winter.  The best months to visit this region are October-December and March-April.

Oaxaca
The high elevation of 5000 ft has provided Oaxaca with a pleasant tourist weather all year round.  Winter can be chilly with the temperatures dropping to the forties whereas Summer's temperatures can rise to the nineties.  Humidity levels are moderate and tolerable all year round.

San Cristobal de Las Casas
Winter nights in this southern extreme of the country are generally cold, with daytime temperatures ranging from sixties to seventies.  On the contrary, Summers can be warm and drenchy, with daily temperatures ranging between eighties and sixties.  Best time to visit is October-November, and March-April.

The Baja Peninsula
The west (Pacific Ocean) coast is always cooler than the east coast.  Winters here are usually mild with warm days and chilly nights, with several windy days throughout the season.  Temperatures exceeding one hundred degree is not unusual during Summer, and humidity levels can be very high.  The best time to visit this region are from October-November and April-May.
