Day
of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is the day for the living to hold a feast and
celebration in memory of their late relatives. There are street parades,
decorated cemeteries and streetside shrines honoring the deceased to mark the
festival. Mariachi music fill the air, every shop window is decorated and
parties spring up everywhere.
Dia
de la Raza
The arrival of Columbus and his crew is regarded by the Mexicans as the
birth of their race, hence Dia de la Raza to commemorate this historical event.
There are all-night celebrations in Cancun on this holiday, of which the most
spectacular ones are held in downtown.
Viva
Mexico in Cancun
A program of cultural events takes place all September to honor Mexico's
Independence. Every day of the month several interesting events with
primarily patriotic theme such as pottery and craft exhibitions, folkloric
dances, music concerts, official ceremonies and much more are held throughout
the city.
Grito
de la Independencia
The Grito or cry of independence is held ever September 15 on the stroke of
midnight. The official cry is carried out by the president whereas local
governors give out their "Viva Mexico!" Grito on their government
house's balconies. The official celebration is then followed by parties
and celebrations.
Autumn
Equinox at Chichen Itza
The sight of the Mayan edifice at Chichen Itza itself is already
fascinating, but the place draws even more visitors during the Autumn Equinox in
September. Thousands of people come to see the sun casts its rays on the
Chichen Itza pyramid which creates an impressive illusion of a serpent moving
down the steps.
