Travel Tips
Time: GMT/UTC -6 (Central Standard Time).

Dress Code: The dress standards around the beach areas are mostly casual, but appropriate outfits are recommended when visiting important establishments.  Be advised that some restaurants do not accept clients in jeans and tennis shoes.  It is also recommended to use strong sunscreen and always cover yourself up when going outdoors to prevent sunburn.

When To Go: The almost year-round perfect tropical weather makes Acapulco very crowded most of the time.  However, the peak tourist season is the period from December to the end of Easter, and during the July and August school break.  Semana Santa is normally the busiest time of the year.  If you really want to avoid the crowds, try the rainy season from June to September.  Accommodation rates during this season tend to be lower, and you can still enjoy the sun after the daily's few hours rain stop.

Language: Spanish, but English is widely understood by staff at large establishments as a result of increasing number of English-speaking travellers.

Banking Hours: Most banks exchange foreign currency Monday through Friday from 9am to noon.  Banks are generally open until 6pm, and some have limited hours on Saturday.

Currency:
New Mexican Pesos (MXN), sometimes written $.
Notes issued: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500.
Coins issued: 10 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20.

Tax: Acapulco charges hotel guests a 2% room tax.  There is no tax refund for international visitors.

Hospital: Embassies should be able to provide a list of English-speaking doctors if necessary, and American Express cardholders can make use of their Global Assist medical referral service.

Phones: Local, domestic and long-distance and international phone calls can be made from any public phone with a phonecard.  Otherwise, a number of shops have public phones (for international services look for the blue "Larga Distancia" signs).  You can dial direct from most big hotels, but the charge will be much higher.
