GETTING THERE

Air
The Alvarez International Airport in Acapulco is always busy with flights to and from the U.S. and Canada as well as from European countries.  Many flights can be connect through Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta.  The airport is 23km southeast of the city center and you can hop on a taxi or the Transportaciones Aeropuerto shuttles to go into town after your arrival.

Bus
Typically, all of the services along the coast are frequent, fast and efficient.  There are two major first-class bus operators, Sistema Estrella Blanca (a unified services of several companies) and Estrella de Oro, which connect Acapulco from Mexico City with amicable luxury and prices.  Most buses arrive at the Central de Autobuses on Ejido which is 3km northwest of the zocalo.  However, Estrella de Oro buses arrive at their own terminal 3km west of the zocalo.  From these terminals you can take buses marked "Centro" or "Caleta" to get to the central city.

Car
It takes approximately six hours to drive from Mexico City to Acapulco via the old route (Carretera Libre a Acapulco).  There is also an option of a four-lane toll road which reduces driving time to around 4.30 hours, but the fee is quite hefty ($48 one way).

Ship
Most cruises which anchor off Acapulco originate from Los Angeles.  Cruise lines include Celebrity, Crystal P&O, Cunard, and Princess Cruises.  Tickets can be procured through a travel agent.

GETTING AROUND

Bus
The local bus system in Acapulco is well-managed and has extensive stops.  Riders can choose from either its new line of pastel colored buses or its noticeably old school buses.  They can be accessed from almost every street corner as the covered bus stops complete with posted route maps line the Costera.  Buses operate from 5AM-11PM daily.

Taxi
Travellers can take a taxi anywhere in Acapulco, but it's advisable to agree on the fare before you hop in to avoid the rip-off.  There are several types of taxis with the main ones being the large American-type vehicles usually found at the hotels, and the cheaper, old-fashioned Beetles found on the streets.

Car
Cars can be rented from rental car companies which have kiosks at the airport and at hotel desks along the Costera.  However, it's much cheaper and more convenient to take taxis or buses to tour around unless you plan to explore the outlying areas.
